Improving Holstein Genetics
Asturian Breeders Cooperative to increase Dairy Farms Profits
Ascol, founded in 1986, brings together more than 1.000 dairy producers. Selecting Holstein Sires is one of the main Ascol objectives, in order to offer high quality bovine genetics to his partners and customers.
Our bulls’ sires and dams are carefully selected among the entire world population, in order to take advantage of worldwide genetic variability. We apply a very high selection pressure and put efforts reducing the generation interval in order to increase genetic merit every year.
Ascol’s bulls are housed in the Center for Bovine Selection and Reproduction in Cenero (Gijón), managed by Asturgen and approved by the UE as a semen collection and storage center for Intra-Trade.
Sire Progeny testing for more than 25 years
Our bull sire program is the perfect tool to accomplish ASCOL’s main objective: work closely with farmers to bring them the information and genetic means to improve the profitability of their dairy farms.
ASCOL is involved all along the selection process, acting as main responsible for the Milk recording Program and for the Holstein Herdbook in Asturias, thought ASCOLAF, the association formed by ASCOL members taking part in CONAFE (Spanish National Holstein Association)
ASCOL PROVEN BULLS
Over 25 years developing the Proven Sires Selection Schemes. Our bulls are tested in a large number of herds working under different production systems, and with reliabilities reaching 90% in the first test. Thanks to the stability in figures round after round, the ASCOL selection scheme has gained and excellent reputation.
ASCOL YOUNG GENOMIC BULLS
ASCOL genomic bulls are selected by double checking: taking into account the two most important reference populations of the world: EuroGenomics and North America. In the bull potfolio you will find not only high genomic values but also sires coming from the best Holstein families.
Staff&Board
The Direction Board of the cooperative has five members which are selected by the General Assembly of members. The staff members are in charge of carrying out the different programs accorded by the board bodies.
ASCOL headquarters are located in the administrative building of the Center for Bovine Selection and Reproduction in Cenero (Gijón).
